How to Detect Abuse

Hi DreamKit members. Today I will be writing an article on how to detect abuse. We all need to be aware that there are abusive people out there or a friend might need your help dealing with an abusive partner.

The most common types of abuse are physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological.

Signs of an abuser:

Physical abuse:

  • Aggression, anger, hostility, lashing out. This person might attack or throw an object at others. An abuser can take their anger out on a partner, child or an animal(s).
  • Controls your daily living, tells you what to wear, tells you who you can or can not hang out with. Demanding you to be with them all the time. Tells you that you have to take illegal drugs or drink hard liquor.

Emotional abuse:

  • Makes you feel bad. Tells you that you are not good enough or puts you down. Tells you that you are the one who always starts an argument or says you are the one who causes their anger. Tells you that you will not find anyone like them or says no one will love you.

Sexual abuse:

  • Forces sex with you when you are sleeping.
  • Rough or violent sexual activity.
  • Human trafficking or selling their partner to another person for sex.

Psychological abuse:

  • Someone who is in denial and believes they are innocent. They might deny they are abusive or blame the other person. However this type of abuser is extremely charming to others.
  • A person who is jealous of you or the people you associate with. They convince you that your family and friends are not good for you.

Signs of someone being abused:

  • A person might have frequent absences from school or work.
  • Refuses to be seen, isolates themselves from others, and cancels plans all the time.
  • Has anxiety, depression, and fears thinking or even talking about their partner.
  • Might have lost a lot of weight; malnutrition.
  • They can have bruises or red marks on body, and even broken bones. Someone who is being abused may not want to see a doctor.

A relationship between two people should be loving and caring, with patience, acceptance, and romance.

You should be able to talk and understand each other without arguments.

Partners will sometimes disagree, however, it does not have to get to the point where someone is hitting or screaming at the other person.

If you or someone you know are in an abusive relationship, please call 211. A Mobile Crisis Team staff can meet up with you at a safe place. If you or someone is in need of immediate attention please call 911.

Operators are there to help anyone in need. I hope this article provided some insights on the different types of abuse and how to notice the signs of an abuser.
